T-pins are built differently from standard sewing pins – the T-shaped head gives you something to push against and something to pull against, which is exactly what you need when you’re pinning into blocking mats, foam wig heads, upholstery batting, or any material thick enough to resist a straight pin.
Blocking knitwear is the primary use case. After washing, a hand-knitted or crocheted garment needs to be pinned into shape and left to dry. T-pins hold the fabric firmly against the blocking mat without the head slipping through the stitches, and the rust-resistant stainless steel means they can handle the damp conditions of wet blocking without corroding. 100 pins is a good quantity for blocking a full garment or shawl.
Pinning wigs is the other major use. Wig makers and stylists use T-pins to secure hairpieces to foam wig heads during construction, styling, and storage. The T-head grips the foam reliably and the pin length gives enough purchase to hold securely without going all the way through.
Upholstery work – T-pins are used to temporarily hold fabric taut over foam or board while stretching and stapling, keeping tension even without shifting. For DIY upholstery, re-covering dining chairs, or stretching canvas onto frames, T-pins are the right tool.
